MARCH 5, 2001

Two factions of the Douglas Indian Association are engaged in a dispute over who is the rightful leader of the 403-member federally recognized tribe in Douglas, Alaska.

Dorothy Owen was elected president in January 2000. But then George Mather Jr. was elected in another election this past January, leading to the dispute.

A new election may be held soon.
