BIA employee rejects plea agreement

APRIL 23, 2001 A Bureau of Indian Affairs employee accused of demanding kickbacks has rejected a plea agreement, said his lawyer on Friday. A hearing was scheduled in which Herman G. Fisher would plead guilty to charges in connection with his attempt to solicit $300,000 from an Albuquerque, New Mexico, contractor who was manufacturing portable classrooms for reservation schools. But his lawyer said talks on the plea fell apart so the Friday hearing was canceled. FBI authorities audio-taped Fisher accepting almost $15,000 from the contractor. Fisher is currently on paid leave, according to a BIA employee. Get the Story:
