APRIL 27, 2000

The state of Connecticut wants the BIA to turn over all documents pertaining to the preliminary federal recognition of two tribes in the state. The state has made the request under the Freedom of Information Act. The state originally made a request two years ago for documents, having received about 5,000 pages. The state said they need the remainder of documents in order to review and comment upon the two tribes' status.

The Paucatuck Eastern Pequots and Eastern Pequots received preliminary recognition last month. The BIA has a 180-day comment period after granting preliminary status. The tribes then get a 60-day period to respond to the BIA before the agency makes its final decision. The comment period began March 31st.
