Crow Tribe said almost broke

The Crow Tribe of Montana will go broke by the end of the week unless it lays off hundreds of employees, said John Donham, who quit his job as the tribe's accountant on Tuesday.

Donham accuses the tribe of financial mismanagement. The tribe's ousted former Secretary, Tilton Old Bull, has filed a suit in federal court making similar allegations.

The tribe says Donham's allegations are inaccurate. He had been fired by the tribe two weeks ago but rehired the same day after a local bank refused to cash payroll checks.

Although Donham is an accountant, he is no longer a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). The state of Montana told The Billings Gazette he can't bill himself as a CPA, but according to a letter obtained by the paper, he has done so as recently as March 24.
