APRIL 5, 2001 If you can prove you are a descendant of the historic Brothertown Indian Tribe then you might be eligible for enrollment in the New York Brothertown Indian Tribal Nation. The historic Brothertown Tribe is composed of members from the Mohegan and Pequot Nations. The tribe's leaders signed a treaty with the federal government in which they were promised land on the Oneida Nation in New York. Today, there exist a number of Brothertown Tribes in Wisconsin, New York, and Connecticut. None are federally recognized although the Wisconsin-based tribe, also known as Petitioner #67, filed for federal recognition in 1980 and is on the Bureau of Indian Affairs "ready" list, awaiting a decision. The group seeking members has also filed to gain recognition. They can be emailed at BTN74@Yahoo.com Get the Story:
