Stricter recognition guidelines wanted

MAY 1, 2001 During a speech in southeastern Connecticut, Freshman Congressman Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) on Monday said he wants the federal recognition guidelines to be made more strict. Three towns in the region and the state are challenging the preliminary recognitions of the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe. A lawsuit they filed alleges the Bureau of Indian Affairs under former Assistant Secretary Kevin Gover failed to abide by the recognition criteria set out in federal regulations.
