MAY 17, 2001

The law firm hired by three Connecticut towns to fight three Pequot tribes has been enlisted to help officials in Hollywood, Florida, oppose the Seminole Tribe.

Officials are worried about the tribe's recent land purchases. They are worried the tribe will seek to place the land into trust and are paying the Perkins Coie $250 an hour, up to $25,000, to investigate what the tribe is up to.

The law firm has helped the towns of Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston fight the an application of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation for 165 acres of land. The firm has also helped the towns oppose the federal recognition petitions of two state-recognized Pequot tribes.
