MAY 22, 2000 The New London Day reports that the petition for federal recognition submitted to the BIA by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation contains no genealogical data. A copy of their petition is on file with Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal. The tribe submitted a petition in 1983, months before the Mashantucket Pequot Settlement Act, which granted them federal recognition was passed. The tribe in 1979 had filed a letter of intent. The BIA had marked it "OD" for "obvious deficiencies." Genealogical data of the tribe is kept at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center and is restricted to tribal members. Get the Story:
