The Oneida land claims talks will continue. The Oneida Nation of New York and the counties of Oneida and Madison had until Monday 5PM to declare whether settlement talks are at an impasse. The parties filed papers in federal court, indicating their desire to continue talks.

The two have been negotiating for 15 months on a settlement for land illegally transferred to the state of New York in the 18th and 19th centuries but have been unable to come to an agreement.

The Oneida Nation of Wisconsin said they see no point in continuing if the counties and the New York Oneida cannot come to an agreement. The Oneida of the Thames in Canada are also parties to the settlement.

A group called the American Land Rights Coalition met last week with lawyers for the Senate and House Indian Affairs committees and the U.S. Department of Justice over the pending Oneida Nation land claims. The group wants the Oneida to drop local landowners from a lawsuit against the counties of Oneida and Madison.
