Neb. hemp bill stalled

MAY 24, 2001

The Nebraska State Legislature on Wednesday put off until next year a bill to legalize the production of industrial hemp.

Sponsor Sen. Gene Tyson of Norfolk says it could bring economic benefits for farmer. Opponents say it will only cause confusion and lead to other problems.

Hemp doesn't contain the THC which makes its cousin marijuana a favorite drug. But federal law doesn't differentiate between the two.

Federal authorities last year raided an industrial hemp farm on the Pine Ridge Reservation in neighboring South Dakota.
