MAY 7, 2001

In response to a recent attack on Alaska Natives, the Alaska State Senate on Sunday approved a hate crimes bill.

The bill elevates juveniles who are at least 16 years old to adult status for crimes committed because of the victim's race, gender, creed, physical or mental disability, ancestry or national origin. Two of the three White youths who videotaped themselves shooting Alaska Natives with a paint-ball gun are juveniles.
