Navajo ruling draws praise criticism

JUNE 1, 2001

Tuesday's decision of the Supreme Court to strike down a tax imposed by the Navajo Nation drew praise from non-Indians and state officials as tribal leaders and attorneys said it only makes matters worse.

Opponents of the tax said the decision said it upholds the rights of non-Indian owned businesses located within reservation land. A number of states and anti-treaty rights groups filed legal briefs opposing the tax.

Tribes, on the other hand, said the decision doesn't make taxation issues any more clearer. While businesses located on reservations often benefit from tourism there, for instance, tribes cannot collect taxes in almost all situations.
