Judge to decide on Navajo trust fund

JUNE 14, 2001 A federal judge in Utah on Wednesday said she will instruct state officials there on how to prepare reports proving the Navajo Nation was not cheated out of royalty funds. The state currently administers the trust fund for the tribe. The fund contains royalties from oil drilled on tribal land in San Juan County. The fund, established in 1933, has seen $62 million flow into it. Its current worth is $13 million. The tribe alleges the state has mismanaged the fund and is suing, claiming losses of $142 million plus interest. Get the Story:
