Police respond to profiling

JUNE 28, 2001

Police departments across the nation are trying to respond to growing concerns of racial profiling by their officers.

Police in Washington, California and South Dakota are some of the many coming up with policies to address the issue. The State-Tribal Relations Committee of the South Dakota Legislature wants police departments there to collect data to see if Indians are unfairly targeted.

There is evidence making changes works. In response to complaints by minorities, the US Customs Service has implemented policies that have resulted in significantly less searches of innocent travelers and increased seizures of contraband.
