Congressmen probe Babbitt
JUNE 30, 2000

Connecticut Senators Christopher J Dodd and Joseph I Lieberman and Representatives Sam Gejdenson and Christopher Shays wrote Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbitt, asking him to explain various aspects of the federal recognition process and explain why the BIA allegedly has not responded to local towns and why they did not notify the towns of changes in the process.

Town officials from Ledyard, North Stonington, and Preston met with other officials in Washington DC this week to discuss their issues with the pending federal recognition of the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot and the Eastern Pequot tribes.

Next month, the towns, their lawyers, and state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal will meet with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
