Group seeks moratorium on executions

With two scheduled to take place this month, a Washington, DC, group today will hold a news conference on a letter sent to President Bush calling for a moratorium on federal executions.

The group, Citizens for a Moratorium on Federal Executions, wants further investigation of racial and geographic disparities in federal execution cases studied. A preliminary Department of Justice study showed that a disproportionate number -- 70 percent -- are minorities. Some 74 percent of defendants considered in federal capital punishment cases were also minorities.

Convicted Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh is set to die on June 11, the first federal election in 38 years. His lawyers are seeking a delay.

Convicted murderer and drug kingpin Juan Raul Garza is set to die on June 19.
