Dodd wants recognition moratorium

JUNE 7, 2001

Senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) on Wednesday said he will ask new Senate Indian Affairs Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye (R-Hawaii) to consider putting a moratorium on all pending federal recognition decisions.

Dodd says the advent of gaming has tainted the process.

A spokesperson for Inouye said the Senator would rather see decisions sped up than stopped.

Dodd in February said he would propose legislation to reform the federal recognition system. So far, he has not produced any bills.

On a radio program in February, Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.), now Vice Chairman of Indian Affairs, said former Assistant Secretary Kevin Gover asked the Committee to consider a moratorium. But Campbell declined, he said, after consulting various members of Congress from both parties.
