BIA expands Pequot meeting
JULY 11, 2000

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has expanded to two days its already scheduled meeting over the federal recognition of two Connecticut tribes, the Eastern Pequot and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot.

The BIA will meet with Connecticut State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, leaders from the towns of Ledyard, North Stonington, and Preston, as well as representatives from the two tribes, on July 27 and July 28.

One of the primary questions will no doubt focus on a memo obtained by the The Hartford Courant. The paper says Kevin Gover ignored the findings of the Bureau of Acknowledgement and Research, the BIA group which researches and makes recommendations on federal recognition petitions.

Senator Christopher Dodd (D-Conn) has already asked for a delay in the final ruling on the two petitions, citing the memo.
