JULY 11, 2000

56 tribal members, including eight incumbents, are on the ballot for the upcoming June 22 primary for the Mohegan Tribal Council, where nine seats are up for grabs.

After the primary reduces the field to two for each seat, a final election will be held August 27. Already, 60 percent of primary ballots have been returned by the 850 eligible voting members.

Salaries for the council range from $200,000 to $400,000, plus bonuses. The positions last 5 years and the election is the first since the tribal constitution was changed since the Mohegan Sun casino was opened in October 1996.

Issues facing the 1,360-member tribe include the expansion of the casino as well as other business and cultural ventures.
