JULY 13, 2000 Paul Jeffrey Mayo pleaded innocent in US District Court in Vermont to charges in connection with gun smuggling on the Kahnawake Mohawk First Nation in Quebec, Canada. Mayo, a New York City steel worker, allegedly obtained the guns from a Vermont couple and transported them to the reserve and resell them. He was indicted on one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States and conspiracy to export stolen firearms and 13 counts of exporting firearms without a license.
