The Bureau of Indian Affairs will deputize the 17 members of the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians' police force as federal officers, the tribe said on Monday.

The tribe will be the first in California to receive the distinction. The officers will have greater power to investigate and arrest suspects for federal crimes but authority is limited in certain areas.

California is Public Law 280 state. The state has jurisdiction over all crimes in Indian Country.

The officers will be sworn-in on Wednesday.
