JULY 21, 2000

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut hold their primary on Saturday and a total of 56 candidates are seeking nine seats. The primary will reduce the number down to 18.

Members of the tribe and investors are paying close attention to the primary to see if any incumbents are ousted. The election is important because it is the first since the tribe opened its casino in 1994.

Salaries for the council range from $200,000 to $400,000, plus bonuses. The positions last 5 years.

Issues facing the 1,360-member tribe include the expansion of the casino as well as other business and cultural ventures. The eligible voting pool is 850 members.
