JULY 28, 2000

Eight state recognized tribes in Virginia are the subject of a bill introduced by Representative James P Moran yesterday.

The Mattaponi, Pamunkey, Chickahominy, Eastern Chickahominy, Upper Mattaponi, Rappahannock, Nansemond, and Monacan Indian Nations would receive federal recognition if the bill passes. In 1999, the Virginia legislature passed a resolution urging Congress to grant federal recognition to the tribes in the state.

The bill is HR 5073.
