Mexican trucks still contentious

Republicans and the White House on Thursday accused Democrats in the Senate of unfairly trying to block Mexican trucks from entering the United States.

The Senate last week voted against free travel of the trucks, prompting charges of anti-Mexican and anti-Hispanic claims of bias from Minority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.). Democrats say they only want the trucks to be safe.

To meet that goal, Democrats have introduced safety standards on the trucks. But Republicans and the White House say the 22 guidelines will effectively ban the trucks.
