TUESDAY, JULY 31, 2001

The public has until August 2 to submit comments on the pending federal recognition status of the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Eastern Pequot Tribe of Connecticut.

The deadline marks the end of a more than a year since the tribes were granted preliminary recognition by former Assistant Secretary Kevin Gover. Officials in Connecticut asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs to extend the public comment period twice.

The BIA is to issue a final determination on the tribes by the end of the year.
