JULY 6, 2000

Five boxes containing materials used by the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut in their petition for federal recognition are now under lock and key in the of Montville Town Hall. The town purchased them from the Bureau of Indian Affairs for about $10,000.

The boxes had been removed by a man who says he is Mohegan but not a member of the tribe. He had removed them after a town official said it was OK to do so and brought them back about four hours later.

The New London Day says that public records are usually available for review but may not be removed from town offices.
