JULY 7, 2000

In June, the United States Court of Federal Claims ruled that European settlers illegaly took 2.8 million acres of land from the Alabama-Coushatta, entitling the Texas tribe to receive potentially millions of dollars for compensation from the federal government.

The court also ruled that the federal government failed to protect the tribe's interests. The tribe's lawyers are calculating how much money the tribe might be owned for lost natural resources royalties.
