AUGUST 11, 2000

The New York town of Lenox says the Oneida Nation is violating law by erecting a sign on land the tribe has purchased.

The town has ordered the tribe to appear in court for violating zoning laws. But the tribe says the land it bought is part of a 250,000-acre reservation protected by a 1795 treaty and not subject to local laws.
