Recognition nears for Nipmuc

AUGUST 14, 2000 A ruling on the federal recognition petition of the Nipmuc Nation in Massachusetts is expected in November. Although William Gould, council chairman, says the tribe won't file suit for land in Connecticut, local towns are looking into the possibility that the tribe might do so. The tribe owns about 4 acres of land in Massachusetts, near the Connecticut border. The BIA Branch of Acknowledgment and Research lists two Nipmuc Nations up for a ruling. The smaller, 335-member Chaubunagungamaug Band separated from the 1,640 Hassanamisco Band in 1996. Gould is the chairman of the larger band. Get the Story:
