Senate approves Mexican truck standards

THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2001 Over the objections of President Bush, the Senate on Wednesday approved by a voice vote a $60.1 billion transportation spending bill that imposes tough safety standards on Mexican trucks entering the United States. In the name of free trade, the White House and Republicans say the trucks should be allowed to travel freely. But Democrats say they want to make sure Americans are safe on their own highways.
