State govt to swap land for tribe

AUGUST 23, 2000

The state of Montana and the US Bureau of Land Management are getting ready to swap some lands and return them to the Crow Tribe.

A survey error inadvertently removed a strip of land from the tribe's reservation in 1891. In 1994, the Crow Boundary Settlement Act was passed, authorizing the government to correct for the error.

The government will exchange some 27,000 acres of BLM land with about 21,000 acres of state land lying within the reservation. The BLM will give that land to the tribe.

A series of public hearings on the proposal will begin September 11. One issue which may be important is the cost of grazing leases.

BLM leases are cheaper than state ones - $1.35 versus $4.17.
