THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2001

While he was acting deputy attorney general at the Department of Justice, Robert S. Mueller, the new director of the FBI, approved a subpoena to take the home telephone records of a journalist.

Mueller approved the subpoena in May to take the records of John Solomon. Solomon is covering the investigation of Sen. Robert G. Torricelli (D-N.J.).

The Associated Press and media groups have criticized the Justice Department for taking the records.
