FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 2001 A federal judge on Thursday rejected a request by the Eastern Pequot Tribe of Connecticut to extend the amount of time to file comments on its federal recognition petition. The tribe had requested an additional 30 days to submit comments. The tribe's team of researchers cited the amount of material they had to review as a reason for the extension. Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb is set to issue a final determination on the Eastern Pequot Tribe and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe. The state of Connecticut opposes the tribes' recognition.
