New York State testimony continues

AUGUST 3, 2000 New York State witness Alexander von Gernet continued his testimony on behalf of the state, saying he reached different conclusions from other scholars because he did more research using original documents on the Cayuga Nation. von Gernet admitted some of his own sources differ from his own views. He testified that the state tried to protect the tribe, not cheat them, as others have stated. The Department of Justice earlier tried to limit von Gernet's testimony but were denied by US District Judge Neal McCurn. McCurn must decide how much interest, if any, to add to the $36.9 million awarded to the tribe by a jury in February. Get the Story:
