AUGUST 7, 2000

The Mescalero Apache Tribe of New Mexico has subpoenaed tribal member Carleton Palmer, asking that he come before the council to substantiate his criticisms of the tribe and allegations of wrongdoing.

Palmer will appear Tuesday morning before the council. He has recently circulated a petition calling for the recall of President Sara Misquez.

He also says five members of the 10-member council have a conflict of interest because they work for the Bureau of Indian Affairs' Mescalero Agency under Lee Simmons, whose wife is a council member.

The tribe in May censured council member Haryln Geronimo for unsubstantiated allegations.
