WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8, 2001 In a letter to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe of Connecticut threatens a lawsuit if forced to merge with the Eastern Pequot Tribe. The BIA has previously said the tribes have a better chance of gaining final federal recognition if they would join. The BIA may not have the authority to direct the tribes to merge, however. The comment period on the tribes closed last week. They both have 30 days to respond to comments. Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb will issue a final determination in December. Get the Story:
