MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2001 In documents recently filed with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe of Connecticut says a rival group is not a real tribe. The Eastern Pequot Tribe only formed after its members were denied enrollment in the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, claims a Paucatuck researcher. The researcher also says the Eastern Pequot group has invented its tribal history. Both groups are trying to obtain federal recognition. A final determination is due by the end of the year.
