SEPTEMBER 1, 2000 Wen Ho Lee, the scientist suspected of stealing secrets from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, could go free as early as noon today if the US government doesn't successfully appeal the decision to release Lee on bail. Last week, US District Judge James Parker in New Mexico ordered Lee to be released on $1 million bail. The government said they would appeal the decision. Affidavits unsealed in court on Thursday also revealed a former acting chief of counterintelligence at the Department of Eneregy and the former head of security at the lab showed that both believe Lee has been singled out based on his face. Lee was born in Taiwan and is accused of stealing information for potential sale to China. Meanwhile, about 30 Federal Bureau of Investigation agents searched Lee's home in White Rock for about 12 hours looking for evidence of crimes allegedly committed by Lee. The government said they wanted to make sure no senstive evidence was at the home before Lee's potential release. Get the Story:
