Chairwoman faces removal from office

SEPTEMBER 12, 2000 Mamie Rupnicki, Chairwoman of the Prairie Band Potawatomi of Kansas, faces removal from office as early as today, when the tribal council meets to consider a recall effort launched by opponents. Rupnicki's opponents say she used her power to get an order from the tribal court granting her son temporary custody of his children. He had been charged with battery of his wife in July. Rupnicki is also president of the Haskell Indian Nations University Board of Regents. Get the Story:
