SEPTEMBER 15, 2000

The state of Connecticut says historical documents possessed by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation belong in the State Archives and need to be returned.

The state wants to meet with the tribe to discuss the nature of any documents which the tribe has in its collection. Earlier, the tribe presented a state document dating to 1857 which they say proves that the current membership is related to the historic Pequot tribe.

Criminal charges are possible, if it is determined the documents were obtained illegally.
