MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2001 The court monitor overseeing the Department of Interior's efforts to reform the Indian trust fund has issued his third report, focusing on a key project that may keep the system from ever being fixed. Known as data cleanup, court monitor Joseph S. Kieffer III says the Interior has repeatedly failed to provide truthful and accurate information about the project. And under the existing state of management, the Interior has practically no assurance of success, he says. Interior officials have said data cleanup will delay a fix to the system until 2006. Unless the project undergoes a "major reorganization," the system will be delayed even further, says Kieffer. Get the Report:
