In response to a lawsuit lost by the state of Connecticut, some residents of towns located near the Mashantucket Pequot reservation say they want the tribe to pay taxes on land they have purchased.

But they also said the tribe has helped bring business to the area. Even so, residents said the other people are upset because land which is taken into trust by the Department of Interior gets taken off tax rolls and isn't subject to local zoning laws.

The tribe is the largest taxpayer in the town of North Stonington. According to the inventory of all taxable properties in town, the tribe has $17.8 million in holdings.

The next largest holder is : Fisher Controls International Inc. with $5.6 million.
