Opening of jail delayed

SEPTEMBER 7, 2000

A shortage of guards at a new $9 million tribal jail on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation in Colorado has delayed its opening.

The jail will house 78 adults, both male and female, as well as juvniles. It includes sobriety holding cells and a sweat lodge.

The Department of Justice released a study "Jails in Indian Country" in July detailing overcrowing at jails all over the country. More training and more staff were the top two recommendations made by staff at jails.
