SEPTEMBER 7, 2000

The New York counties of Madison and Oneida have spent almost a half a million defending themselves unsuccessfully against the land claims of the Oneida Nation.

The counties spent $440,575 on lawyers, public relations firms, travel, food, and other expenses. The state said they will reimburse the county only for the law firm expenses, potentially leaving taxpayers to foot the rest of the $131,720 bill.
