ADVANCE: Supreme Court denies Maine tribal appeal

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2001

The Supreme Court today declined to hear an appeal by the Penobscot Nation and the Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine regarding their failure to produce documents wanted by paper companies.

The denial lets stand state and federal court decisions which have ordered or otherwise required the tribes to furnish the documents to the companies. The documents concern correspondence the tribes had with the federal government over water quality on rivers within Indian Country.
