Lieberman's help sought on Pequot Tribe

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2001

Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) has promised to help three Connecticut towns resolve their land-into-trust dispute with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, leaders of the towns said.

The leaders of Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston said Lieberman made that promise to them during a private meeting in Washington, D.C., last year. The group had met with various members of the state's Congressional delegation over the town's long-standing lawsuit against the federal government.

Now that talks between the towns and the tribe have broken down, a federal judge has asked the state of Connecticut, the towns and the Department of Justice to update him on the case by November 26. The towns oppose an attempt by the tribe to have 165 acres of land taken into trust.
