Mescalero election declared invalid

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2001

The Mescalero Apache Nation of New Mexico has nullified its recent election after a losing candidate challenged how the vote took place.

Joseph Geronimo said the election was invalid because the tribe used voting machines instead of paper ballots. The council on Monday passed a resolution to allow voting machines but nullified the election anyway.

Mark Chino, son of late President Wendell Chino, had been elected to lead the 3,700-member tribe on November 6. The tribe has undergone internal disputes ever since the elder Chino died in 1998.
