MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2001 The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation is meeting with Connecticut Gov. John Rowland (R) tomorrow to discuss a long-running land dispute with three towns. The towns of Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston filed a lawsuit against the government to stop the Department of Interior from taking 165 acres of land into trust for the tribe. The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals has rejected the towns' argument that the tribe can't seek more trust land. But the court left open whether the approval by then-Secretary Bruce Babbitt was done properly. Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) had been hosting talks to address the issue but they fell apart recently when two towns dropped out. The tribe asked to meet with Rowland around the same time. He will meet seperately with the towns tomorrow as well. Get the Story:
