Morongo leader's son killed in shootout

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2001 The son of Mary Ann Andreas, a well known leader of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians of California, was shot and killed early Monday morning. Local law enforcement have arrested a man who was seen carrying a gun and exiting the home in which Joshua Andreas was found dead and John Andreas, his father, was shot. Sherman Brown was detained after a short gun fight during which he was injured. Mary Ann Andreas was not in the home at the time and has been living elsewhere pending a divorce. She served as chairwoman of the tribe for four terms, drawing national attention for her commitment to tribal sovereignty. Get the Story:
