The state of New York is asking a federal judge to force the United States into helping compensate the Oneida Nation for 250,000 acres of stolen land.

At a hearing in federal court on Thursday the state said the goverment bears some of the brunt for the lost land. A lawyer for the Department of Jutsice said it was all the state's doing.

The Oneida land claim has dragged on for 30 years. The Supreme Court has said the Oneida Nation of New York the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and the Oneida First Nation of Canada are to be compsenated for the land but settlement talks have failed.
